APPROPRIATE ATTIRE AND RIGHT SCARF AT WORK

November 08, 2014

Believe it or not, a recent survey (KB image consultant) came out with surprising (or maybe not so surprising) results regarding women at work. The major conclusion of this survey is that, whatever college degrees and professional skills a woman has, her appearance counts for about 60% in the credibility customers or other staff members place in her. In other words women’s look at work is essential.

Remember the movie “Devil wears Prada”: Anne Hathaway is a young smart graduate from college. She gets her first job in a famous fashion magazine. Yet, she dresses so poorly that all her colleagues look at her with contempt. It’s only when she starts being more stylish that she succeeds in impressing her (icy) fashion Chief Editor (wonderful Meryl Streep!) and in gaining her trust…

It is sad in a sense to think that form and style can win over skills and substance. On the other hand, it’s better to face reality: women remain women no matter what and they have assets men don’t have. Yesss! (sorry guys and fierce women's lib supporters but that’s the way it is…)

The first good news is that women can easily work on their look and improve it – without overdoing of course – to optimize their chance to be successful in their job. The other good news this survey comes up with is that accessories, and more especially scarves, are women’s best allies to dress up in an appropriate and subtle way. It all depends on how you choose / tie / wear your scarf.

The first thing to do is to determine which “work family” is yours. There are roughly three main work categories and, depending on the one you belong to, here are different scarf styles we suggest:

  • Formal interactive jobs (insurance, bank, finance, real estate, justice, etc..)

Opt for a preppy, simple and timeless business suit. Wear a neck scarf tied to the front over your jacket in a pretty classic way. Stay away from low cut tops, short skirts, over the edge shoes and wild outfits. You want to convey the image of someone trustworthy and reliable. Remember that your image will reflect the image of your company.

  • “Exposed” communication jobs (media, fashion, advertising, PRs, artists)

You need to stand out of the crowd, to prove you have imagination and you keep up with the trend. Accent your personality with a touch of (under control though) originality. Pick trendy and bright colors and wear your scarf in an innovative and eye-catching way such as a fashionable headband, a silk belt or a dazzling top. Tie it in a spectacular way. Difference should be your motto!

  • Jobs with limited direct interactivity (administration, working from home or over the phone)

Wear your scarf in a relatively casual way. If a pair of jeans is your favorite outfit, just zest it up with a scarf. Lucky you: Friday wear applies to every day of your week…Though you care about your image, you are not stuck into strict dress codes.
